Champix is said to be very effective, boasting great effects in clinical trials. 44% of the Champix users quit during the 12 week trial whereas only 11% of participants on the placebo quit. During this trial, Champix was proven to be twice as effective as buproprion, the main rival drug to varenicline.
Champix acts in the brain but it is not like nicotine therapy where it is only a replacement for the nicotine so that the smoker does not feel the symptoms of withdrawal or craving. It allows the person to get rid of the addiction completely. It is taken orally, ideally with water. However, it does not need to be taken on a full stomach so it is not necessary to eat beforehand.
How Does Champix Stop Smoking Work?

Varenicline is a type of drug that is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial antagonist. Simply put, Champix reduces smoker’s craving for nicotine by binding to nicotine receptors in the brain and reducing the symptoms of withdrawal and craving. It stimulates the nicotine receptors in the brain to produce an effect that fights craving and withdrawal while blocking nicotine from the receptors.
By blocking nicotine from the brain’s receptors, Champix reduces the satisfaction that a smoker receives when smoking or after smoking a cigarette. Cigarettes will no longer taste as good or give that ‘kick’ or ‘hit’ that it normally does, discouraging the person from continued smoking.
Naturally, to be able to quit smoking more easily, you need help and support. Having a support group or a ‘quitting buddy’ whilst stopping the habit can increase chances of success drastically.

The best way to deal with this is to observe the effects of the drug on you before you drive or operate any machinery, for your own and for others’ safety.
There were some reported cases of suicidal thoughts or behaviour in some people who are on the medication when in the past they had never had any psychological or emotional problems. Some lapsed into depression. This side effect is not negligible and must be attended to right away.
Sometimes some users may have to continue using the treatment for an additional 12 weeks because of the proven effectiveness of the doubled treatment. Stopping this drug may require you to discuss with your doctor whether you can immediately stop or have to taper off the dose.
Note that there was also some reported cases where people experienced nausea for 30 minutes to 1 hour after taking the drug.
